If you’re sick, be sick. Tell your clients you’re sick, and push deadlines back (or let them do stuff themselves—you do have a kick-ass policies and procedures doc for each client that gives them step-by-step instructions about how to do their own stuff, don’t you?). In truth, there’s next to nothing work related that can’t wait a day or two—but your health isn’t going to improve if you don’t take care of yourself, or worse, if you push yourself forward when you should rest.
So stop, tell, and rest, is my motto, borrowed liberally from the way kids are taught to survive fires (stop, drop, and roll).
1. Stop working
2. Tell your clients you need some time and when you think you’ll be back (or when you’ll next communicate about how you’re doing)
3. Rest your body and your mind. Just turn yourself (and your technology)off and heal.
