Here's one for you Stacy - I had finally "made it" as a unix network system administrator: I graduated to a cube with a window seat! There was a non-usable balcony outside my window. Unusable, because being a corporate building, the window didn't open.

The building sat on the edge of Lake Washington. This Great Blue Heron liked to come sit on the railing of my balcony and poop. :)

One day, GBH opened her mouth. I knew she was squawking that very cool dinosaur-like call the GBHs do. Only, I couldn't hear her. This is somewhat embarrassing - in a flash I went from feeling "deaf" to a full blown claustrophobia attack (which I'm not otherwise prone to).

When I recovered, I went to my manager and said "this place is suffocating me and I have to go". It was like an inside-version of myself "took over" my body, and just did the right thing. Freaky.

After I did that, I panicked - what next? I can't go to another place to be suffocated.

I decided that the windows opened in my home, the same place where my dogs live, and where, at certain times of the year, I can have 100 birds in my backyard, all squawking.

I thank that Great Blue Heron everyday for opening my eyes (ears?).

Here's to everyone's Independence Days!

Karen Cleveland

The moment of independence that comes to my mind is the day I resigned from a volunteer position that was consuming my time and not nourishing me at all! While it seemed like independence from a group of people and a "job", I know it was really independence from my then-self who needed to set more boundaries and identify my own standards! Freedom indeed!!

Here's to independence from having to make sure there are enough customer service reps to cover the phones so I can take a gosh darn potty break! (November 2005)

Laurie Cohen

Jan 2010 independence from trying to please a boss who cannot be pleased. Independence from trying to conform to a boss who doesn't communicate or appreciate me.

This is a great discussion since an individual deserves their own independence. It is i like a day of their own freedom from stress, problems, social life, work and many more. When a country's independence day falls in a Sunday it would turn out as an ordinary day. That is why I highly agree in the content of this article.

Thanks for the great discussion

It should be a day remembered and celebrated by all. In Spain, however this does not happen, for example the May 2, 1808 is a key date in our history (Fight Napoleonic Empire), that date marked the decline of the French empire in Spain. We should never forget our past or our history.

This a good explanation, I decided that the windows opened in my home, at certain times of the year, I can have 10 birds in my backyard, all squawking. I Love this web. Thank you. By Xime,
